The UAE’s Green Visa has become one of the most talked-about residency options for global professionals, freelancers, and entrepreneurs. Unlike traditional work visas that require employer sponsorship, the Green Visa empowers individuals to sponsor themselves for a renewable five-year residency.
This innovative system is part of the UAE’s broader vision to attract top talent, support entrepreneurship, and strengthen its role as a global hub for business and innovation. For skilled workers and independent professionals, the Green Visa provides stability, independence, and long-term opportunities in one of the world’s most dynamic economies.
What Is the UAE Green Visa?
The UAE Green Visa is a long-term residence permit designed to provide greater autonomy for expatriates. Holders can live, work, and invest in the UAE without requiring sponsorship from a company or Emirati national. It offers enhanced flexibility for individuals pursuing careers in freelancing, self-employment, or specialised professions.
Key Benefits of the UAE Green Visa
- Family Sponsorship: Green Visa holders can sponsor spouses, children, and first-degree relatives.
- Extended Age Limit for Sons: Male children can be sponsored up to the age of 25 (previously 18).
- No Age Limit for Unmarried Daughters: Unmarried daughters can remain under sponsorship without restrictions.
- Children of Determination: Children with special needs can be granted residency regardless of age.
- Generous Grace Period: Up to six months after expiry or cancellation to renew or adjust status.
- Aligned Residency Terms: Family members’ visas will match the duration of the main Green Visa.
These benefits make the Green Visa an attractive option for families looking for long-term stability in the UAE.
Who Can Apply?
The UAE Green Visa is open to three main categories:
1. Freelancers
Independent professionals offering services across sectors, with a freelance permit issued by MOHRE (Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation).
2. Self-Employed Individuals
Business owners operating without employer sponsorship, subject to proof of solvency and income.
3. Skilled Employees
Qualified professionals with:
- An employment contract in the UAE.
- Occupations classified in MOHRE’s first, second, or third levels.
- At least a bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
- A monthly salary of AED 15,000 or more.
Requirements and Documentation
Applicants must provide:
- Valid Passport Copy (minimum 6 months validity).
- Personal Photograph (as per UAE visa guidelines).
- Freelance/Self-Employment Permit (for freelancers/self-employed).
- Proof of Education (bachelor’s degree or specialised diploma).
- Proof of Income or Solvency (at least AED 360,000 annual income over the last two years, or evidence of financial stability).
Application Cost and Processing Time
The Green Visa application includes fees for the entry permit, Emirates ID, medical fitness test, and residence visa issuance. Costs vary based on applicant type and services selected, but are broadly comparable to other long-term visas in the UAE.
Processing typically takes 1 to 3 months, though most applicants complete the process within a few weeks if all documentation is in order.
Validity and Renewal
The Green Visa is issued for five years, renewable for an additional five years provided eligibility conditions are met. This long-term validity makes it especially appealing for expatriates seeking stability and flexibility in the UAE.
Why It Matters
The UAE Green Visa reflects the country’s strategy to:
- Attract global talent in technology, business, and specialised professions.
- Empower entrepreneurs and freelancers with greater independence.
- Enhance the UAE’s position as a global destination for work, investment, and innovation.
