When Tariffs Bite: How Rising U.S. India Trade Tensions Could Transform UAE’s Role in Global Trade
By Al Kabban & Associates
An Unraveling Friendship: Trump’s Tariffs Shake U.S. India Relations
Once powered by warm camaraderie, ties between Prime Minister Modi and former President Trump are now frayed by escalating trade disputes. Trump’s latest move: doubling tariffs on Indian exports to a steep 50%, citing India’s ongoing Russian oil purchases as justification. Indian officials condemn the decision as arbitrary and unfair, especially when other buyers of Russian oil escape sanctions.
With $30–35 billion of Indian exports to the U.S. at risk, industries from textiles to gems and auto parts are scrambling to adapt. Economists warn of potential GDP hit and widespread job losses in export-heavy regions like Ludhiana.
UAE: A Trade Detour and Strategic Buffer
Enter the UAE, both a logistical powerhouse and a legal haven. Indian exporters, from jewelry to apparel, are already shifting production to Dubai to skirt punitive tariffs. With UAE exports landing in the U.S. at a relatively gentle 10% duty, compared to 50% from India, the calculus is stark.
The UAE–India Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) further sweetens the deal. Many Indian goods enter the UAE with 0–5% duties, and when remanufactured and re-exported from free zones, exporters can effectively eliminate duties. This combination of tariff arbitrage and trade facilitation makes the UAE a practical alternative corridor to U.S. markets.
A Manufacturing Pivot
Imagine a textile manufacturer in Punjab. With 50% U.S. duty looming, domestic operations are no longer tenable. But a production outpost in Dubai’s Jebel Ali Free Zone, with deep logistics, tax advantages, and CEPA benefits, quickly becomes a smarter choice. And it’s not hypothetical: over 1,500 Indian companies already operate there, including hubs like Bharat Mart spanning millions of square feet to service global markets.
