A Milestone in UAE Child Protection

In a compelling case that underscores the effectiveness of digital tools and legal protections in the UAE, a 10-year-old boy in Dubai reported his abusive father through the Dubai Police smart app, leading to swift action by the authorities under Wadeema’s Law, the UAE's landmark child protection legislation.

A Brave Step Towards Safety

The boy, identified as A.A., filed a digital report after enduring repeated beatings from his father. Unlike his younger siblings, A.A. was frequently subjected to physical discipline, which left visible bruises. He initially tried to hide his injuries from classmates, but his declining academic performance raised concerns among school staff.

The school’s social worker, after noticing signs of physical and emotional distress, built rapport with the child and encouraged him to file the report via the police app. The Child and Women Protection Department of Dubai Police responded immediately, summoning the father for questioning.

Accountability and Intervention

According to Lt. Colonel Dr. Ali Al Matrooshi, Director of the department, the father admitted to beating his son but claimed he believed harsh discipline was a form of character building, mirroring how he himself was raised. The police clarified that this approach constitutes child abuse and is punishable under UAE law.

“He thought harsh discipline would raise a strong child, but what it caused instead was trauma and social withdrawal,” said Lt. Col. Al Matrooshi.

Legal action is now being considered. The child will receive ongoing psychological and social support, and authorities will follow up to ensure his long-term well-being.

Wadeema’s Law in Action

The case exemplifies the reach of Federal Law No. 3 of 2016, commonly referred to as Wadeema’s Law, which protects children in the UAE from abuse, neglect, and exploitation. Named after a young girl who was tragically abused and killed by her father in 2012, the law provides a robust framework for enforcing children's rights.

Authorities emphasized that anyone in the UAE can report suspected abuse confidentially via:

  • Dubai Police Smart App

  • Dubai Police website

  • Phone (901)

  • Child Oasis at Al Twar Police HQ
