Abu Dhabi Launches Specialized Labour Prosecution to Protect Workers’ Rights
Abu Dhabi has taken a decisive step to strengthen workplace fairness and protect vulnerable employees by launching a dedicated Labour Prosecution. The decision, issued by His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister, Chairman of the Presidential Court, and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, marks a major advancement in the emirate’s justice system.
This specialised prosecution will investigate and handle UAE labour related disputes, violations, and offences involving both labour sector employees and domestic workers, ensuring cases are resolved efficiently and in line with the law.
Why Abu Dhabi Created a Labour Prosecution
Labour disputes often involve unique laws, contracts, and working conditions that require deep legal expertise. By creating a specialised legal unit, Abu Dhabi is:
- Enhancing access to justice for workers.
- Speeding up case handling through expert-led investigations.
- Strengthening the emirate’s reputation for transparency and fairness.
The initiative aligns with the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department’s wider strategy to provide sectorn specific legal services that respond directly to the needs of different communities.
Scope of Authority
The Abu Dhabi Labour Prosecution will cover the entire emirate, including:
- Abu Dhabi City
- Al Ain
- Al Dhafra Region
Its work will focus on cases under:
- Federal Law No. 33 of 2021 – Regulating labour relations, covering contracts, wages, working hours, leave, and termination rights.
- Federal Law No. 9 of 2022 – Protecting domestic workers, including employment conditions, rest periods, and contract terms.
How It Will Operate
The prosecution will be led by a chief prosecutor supported by a trained team specialising in:
- Reviewing employment and domestic worker contracts.
- Investigating wage disputes, contract breaches, and mistreatment allegations.
- Applying the correct legal procedures to safeguard rights.
By bringing in staff who understand both the legal framework and the sensitivities of employment disputes, the unit is expected to deliver fairer outcomes for both workers and employers.
Real World Impact: Examples of Cases
- Unpaid Wages – If a worker claims they have not been paid for months, the Labour Prosecution will review the contract, check payment records, and hold employers accountable where violations are found.
- Domestic Worker Exploitation – If a domestic worker alleges excessive hours without rest, the prosecution will investigate and apply legal penalties where necessary.
Why This Matters for Abu Dhabi
With thousands of workers contributing to Abu Dhabi’s economy, from skilled professionals to domestic helpers, the emirate is reinforcing its commitment to human rights and justice.
For workers, it means a clear path to seek justice. For employers, it means disputes will be handled professionally and transparently, reducing uncertainty.
Supporting Abu Dhabi’s Global Vision
This initiative is part of Abu Dhabi’s broader mission to be recognised as one of the most efficient, transparent, and fair legal systems worldwide. The emirate already operates specialised prosecutions for financial crimes and family disputes, which have shown clear benefits in speed and accuracy.
By extending this model to the labour sector, Abu Dhabi is not only protecting rights but also building trust across its workforce.
