New Management

Abu Dhabi’s correctional and juvenile facilities are set to undergo a change in management starting next year.

In a significant development, the authority over these facilities will shift from Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters to the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department (ADJD). This transition, as per the new law issued by President Sheikh Mohamed, the Ruler of Abu Dhabi, is scheduled to come into effect on January 1, 2024.

With a focus on prisoner rehabilitation, this change reflects a strategic approach to corrections. Officials emphasize the importance of rehabilitation as a core component of their strategy.

The efforts to rehabilitate UAE citizen inmates encompass various programs that extend post-sentence employment opportunities. Notably, more than 30 prisoners have engaged in cooking workshops facilitated by professional chefs.

This innovative initiative, named “Culinary Arts,” is a collaborative venture between the General Department of Punitive and Correctional Establishments, the Emirates Literature Foundation, and Abu Dhabi National Hotels. The program seeks to provide practical skills and future prospects for prisoners, fostering their reintegration into society.
